Microdermabrasion Maryland
Understanding Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion
is a cosmetic procedure that safely and effectively
diminishes fine lines and wrinkles, lightens spots,
and helps to reduce acne scarring. It helps to turn
back the hands of time by stimulating the production
of new skin cells and collagen, all of which give
us the youthful look we are searching for.
Microdermabrasion, also called the "Power Peel,"
gently removes the outer layers of skin, which is
dry dead skin cells, and reveals a fresher skin layer.
This is a completely non-invasive treatment option
for a rejuvenated you.
What are the benefits of Microdermabrasion?
The amazing benefits of Microdermabrasion can be
seen immediately. Your skin will look and feel renewed
and radiant, however, you may not be able to appreciate
all the benefits until you have received all recommended
treatments. Most patients find that a minimum of 6
treatments are necessary to achieve their optimal
benefits. Generally, these sessions are spaced one
to two weeks apart. Your doctor will develop a treatment
schedule that is right for you.
Aside from the visual benefits you will enjoy from
Microdermabrasion, you will also receive many other
benefits that this innovative treatment option gives
you. There are almost no side effects, this is a non-surgical
treatment that is safe and effective with no down-time,
it is effective for all skin colors and types, no
anesthetic is needed, and it is great for those of
us who are sensitive to chemicals because none are
required.
How do I prepare for a Microdermabrasion treatment?
As your doctor will inform you during your consultation,
there are no official pre-treatment requirements,
however, we do have some recommendations. Patients
who smoke are strongly urged to stop approximately
one week prior to your treatment; this is to help
improve blood circulation to your skin. Anyone you
uses topical ointments or creams including Retin-A,
Renova, Differin, and other glycolic acid products
should discontinue use approximately five days before
treatment. It is also recommended that sunbathing,
tanning, and waxing should be avoided for two weeks
prior to a Microdermabrasion treatment.
Patients receiving Microdermabrasion should not receive
cosmetic treatments such as chemical peels or injections
for two weeks prior to treatment. If followed, these
recommendations will help to ensure optimal results.
What is a Microdermabrasion treatment session like?
When you arrive for your treatment your doctor will
begin by thoroughly cleaning the treatment area. Using
a hand-piece connected to the Microdermabrasion machine,
your doctor will apply a sterile diamond surfaced
aesthetic tip to your skin. By employing the appropriate
level of pressure to your skin the treatment will
gently exfoliate the the outer layers of dead skin
cells. As your doctor assesses your skin's needs
the pressure being applied can be adjusted.
The exfoliation process sloughs off dead skin cells.
These cells are then suctioned off to reveal refreshed
and vibrant skin. No anesthesia is required and your
entire treatment session should last approximately
30 minutes. You will then be ready to go on with your
day and immediately resume your normal activities.
Is Microdermabrasion only for the face?
No, Microdermabrasion is a great way of refreshing
skin all over the body. Its rejuvenating effects can
be used on the arms, legs, the back, and any skin
surface needing polishing. This is a total body skin
rejuvenation system.
Although Microdermabrasion is effective on all skin
types and colors, as well as, varying body areas it
has not been found to be effective on deeper skin.
However, it is usually the initial stepping stone
to the more advanced treatments available for treating
complex conditions. These conditions include deep
scarring, stretch marks, and keloids (excessive scar
tissue usually found at a surgical site).
What side effects are there to Microdermabrasion?
There are very few side effects caused by Microdermabrasion
since it is a non-invasive procedure. For some patients
redness or dryness appear after a treatment session.
This is a temporary condition.
Your doctor may recommend the use of moisturizers
to help dry skin. It is also important to use sunscreen
following your treatment to protect your newly exposed
skin. You should try to avoid sun exposure for three
days after Microdermabrasion.
